Band Biography
How it all
began…
DYL was formed
at Rutgers University. It is a pop rock band that plays catchy radio friendly
originals. They feature 2 guitarists, a bassist, and a drummer.
It all started
when Alex Pinchevsky
(who will be referred to as "Pinch" from now on) and Umair Suri (just
Umair) started playing guitar together in Silvers Apts on Busch Campus at
Rutgers University in New Brunswick, NJ. They would play all the songs they
liked at the time (basically Green Day and Offspring... but also the occasional
Bryan Adams or Bon Jovi and pretty much everything in between). "I remember
when we used to play back in Silvers with two crappy amps and using a tape
recorder to record. We listen to those tapes now and we laugh our asses off.
They were horrible. We sound tone deaf!" jokes guitarist Umair Suri.
Double
Yellow Line Show (Asbury Park, NJ) |
They have
come a long way from those days. They just played their first show at The Saint in Asbury Park. That's where
Creed and Jewel and the Boss have all played. Not too bad for their first show
ever. Their website is www.thesaintnj.com Right now, the band is composed of the two 22 year old guitarists, a 22 year old bassist, and 30 year old veteran drummer Dylan I can’t rememeber his last name. |
Pinch played
bass in the studio tracks and kept it simple. "Yeah, bassists have been
difficult to keep. We've had about 7 of them. The first one was joke.. I think
we made him play because he was pledging our Fraternity. He was awful. The
second one wasn't bad but he suddenly disappeared one day. We wonder about him
sometimes. Nice guy but definately weird." Regardless the band has gone
through a couple more bass players and had to acquire an "emergency"
one for the show.
Finally after
about 7 bassists, the band grouped up with bass player Adam Hauser, a baseball
player friend of Umair’s and also a fellow Pi Kappa Alpha Brother at
Rutgers. After only a few practices,
Adam had already become familiar with the band's work and is an enthusiastic
though slightly tardy addition to the band.
His distinctly different musical tastes will add yet another sound to
the band.
What's next?
Who knows. The band is in the process of recording more demos and playing
everywhere they can. It also helps to have a little following from Rutgers.
"The Saint shows would not have been as successful as it was if it wasn't
for the forty Rutgers buddies screamin and jumping up and down like idiots. We
owe a lot to them."
Double Yellow
Line has a number of catchy rock/pop originals. The originals are primarily the
work of frontman Pinchevsky, although both other members offer plenty of input to
them as the songs are developed. "Pretty much, I'll start up a little bit
of something and take it over to Jeff's basement, where the other guys take a
look at it. Chances are within minutes Umair will have a little guitar riff to
go along with it while Dylan will be banging away with some cool beat. Its a
pretty simple but successful process" says Pinch. Though Alex has come up
with the majority of the song lyrics, Umair has written complete songs that
have been added to the DYL repertoire. "A band can't be successful unless
everyone feels their input is valued, and Pinch does a good job allowing the
entire band to get involved in the creative process." says Umair.
To summarize Double Yellow Line and their philosophies on music what do they have to say? "We just like to play."
